Volunteer Opportunity: Charity Trustee

Location: Callington Foodbank (1 Launceston Road, Callington, PL17 7BS)

Salary: Unpaid Voluntary Role

Time Commitment: Approximately 4–8 hours per month (including board meetings, preparation, and occasional event support).

About Us

Callington Foodbank seeks to end food poverty in the Callington and Tamar Valley area. It provides compassionate, practical help through issuing three-day emergency food parcels to those referred to it, together with providing quality time and signposting to further help where needed

Callington Foodbank is a charity founded on Christian principles. Not every member of the volunteer team is a Christian, but all subscribe to the same values. The Charity works closely with local churches that provide core support, together with the local community including businesses, supermarkets and the public, all of whom the Charity depends upon for its essential needs of food donations, finance and volunteering time. It also works in collaboration with other charities and organisations, including a wide range of agencies that refer people to the Foodbank via a voucher system.

It is not affiliated to any political party and is solely funded through donations and grants.

In addition to the Foodbank Manager position Callington Foodbank also employ two part-time staff and a team of volunteers.

We are currently entering an exciting phase of developing "more than food" initiatives, providing a Financial Inclusion Service in Partnership with Citizens Advice, to help prevent dependency and resolve the complex, root causes of local poverty. To guide us through these challenges, we need to strengthen our Board of Trustees, to oversee the strategic direction and governance of our charity.

What You Will Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)

As a Trustee, you will share collective responsibility for the governance of the Foodbank and all decisions made by the board. Your primary duties will include:

· Strategic Direction: Ensuring the food bank pursues its core purpose, goals, and objectives as defined in its governing documents.

· Financial Oversight: Managing resources responsibly, approving budgets, and ensuring the financial stability of the charity.

· Compliance & Risk: Ensuring the charity complies with charity law, company law, GDPR, health and safety, safeguarding, and other relevant legislation. Team Collaboration: Working collaboratively with fellow trustees, a small paid staff team, and a wide network of dedicated volunteers to support the local community.

The Skills & Experience We Need

We are looking for dedicated individuals who bring diverse skills and perspectives. While a passion for social justice and tackling poverty is a must, we are particularly keen to hear from applicants with experience in any of the following: HR, Marketing & social media,

Fundraising and grant application, safeguarding and risk management to enhance our leadership team

We particularly welcome someone with

· Strategic management, leadership, or prior non-executive board experience.

· Lived experience: Personal experience of using food banks or similar crisis services is highly valued.

· Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

· A willingness to speak your mind, think creatively, and maintain an independent, balanced approach to managing risk.

Requirements

· Applicants must be 18 or over.

· Must not be legally disqualified from acting as a charity trustee.

· Must be primarily resident in the UK to ensure access to internal data systems in compliance with data protection policies.
